NASA's fomer space shuttle operations chief Mike Moses has announced he will be leaving NASA to become the new vice president of operations at Virgin Galactic. The move has symbolic significance as the United States scales back its space program and commercial space travel begins to play a more prominent role.
The space shuttle program officially ended this summer to develop a new spacecraft that would launch near the end of the decade. Understandably, Moses didn't feel like waiting around for 10 years when opportunities were presented in the soon to be booming commercial space industry, telling Reuters:
I'm more than onboard with NASA's plan. It's just that the operations of that system were still eight to 10 years away. I couldn't just push paper around and write requirements for the next 10 years so I'm going to take another shot at it here in the commercial sector.
