In a televised interview with France 24, Jeff Mills discusses his recent move to Paris, as well as his lifelong career in techno music, from his early work in Underground Resistance to his later exploration of the movie soundtrack and the theme of science fiction. Of particular interest is Mills' emphasis on techno music as a narrative form. Repeatedly in the segment, Mills highlights techno's ability to tell a story, at one point, suggesting that the genre has an ability to say things in a way that no other narrative can. Mills' deep conceptual investigation of techno and its artisitic possibilities is what has given him the ability, in my view, to create such solid, high impact original music.
When asked why he chose Paris, Mills explains how he had wanted to move to the city from his previous home in Berlin because of his friends and connections in the French capital. One wonders, though, if there wasn't something about the city itself that drew him there.
